In the first full week of Culinary Medicine, We got our Food Handlers Certification, learned about the different ways food can be used as medicine, and had our first lab in the Culinary Lab with Mrs. Cheryl, our school's director of dining services!
Kicking off the school year, we first had to complete the Food Handlers Certification in order to be able to participate in class. The test included many videos and quizzes leading up to the final test which grants a Food Handlers Card. After watching the long videos I passed the test, 70% and above is a passing. After everyone in the class was granted their certificate, we could begin our semester of Culinary Medicine
On Wednesday, After completing the course, we began to discuss the difference between Culinary Arts and Culinary Medicine. Culinary Arts deals with the art of cooking, while Culinary Medicine links food and health together. The guidelines of the course were also discussed and led to a group discussing about what we already knew about Culinary Medicine and how food can be used as medicine.
On Thursday, We had our first official lab in the Culinary Lab! The school's director of dining services, Mrs Cheryl, came and spoke to our class about how to measure dry ingredients, and how to order in which you prepare food makes a world of difference. After Mrs. Cheryl was done, Mrs. McCleery took us through a tour of the kitchen and described the utensils we will be using and what they are used for.
After the first week of Culinary Medicine, I am excited to start cooking and learning more about what Culinary Medicine is and how I can apply it to my daily life!
