On November 1, 2022, John Richardson, an OD2A (Overdose Data to Action) member as well as a recovering drug addict, came and spoke to our class about the importance of raising awareness to the drug fentanyl and how truly dangerous it can be. Fentanyl is a synthetic drug commonly prescribed for pain easement, and more commonly prescribed to terminally ill patients. Illicit fentanyl comes from underground drug labs. It is an opioid that is 10x stronger than cocaine and 100x stronger than morphine. Fentanyl can be extremely fatal and addictive. Unfortunately, there is little to no room to experiment with this highly toxic drug, as your first encounter can easily be your last. It only takes 2 mg to become a deadly dose.
Xylazine is a non opioid veterinary tranquilizer that humans use although it is not approved whatsoever. Xylazine is now being used as an additive to fentanyl, and its symptoms consist of low heart rate, decreased breathing, and even death. it's transparent appearance makes it easily mixable with street drugs.
Mr. Richardson's motivation for his career choice was a process in which he underwent in order to save others from the drastic and life threatening effects from drug use. The reality of drug use in not only the world but our own cities is extremely upsetting to witness and drugs can truly be detrimental to not only one's health but also the lives of loved ones.
