On March 13, 2023, Joslyn Upshaw, a Senior Biomed student came and presented her Biomed Interventions Project on Medical Air Transport to our class, and we played Mario Kart!
Medical Air Transport is the process by whcih trauma patients are transported with planes or helicopters to hospitals or intensive care unites to receive critical care. Air Transport is prevalent in over 170 countries worldwide. In the United States, there have been over 100 million patients transported. it is most necessary especially in mass casualty events, interstate accidents, and any geographic location that ground ambulences cannot reach. From 2018 to 2022, the industry has grown significantly due to the aging world population. it is currently growing at a rate of 0.7%, and makes an estimated $4.5 billion in yearly revenue. The Medical Air transport industry is available to anyone who can meet the health requirements and complete the training process.
After the presentation, we played Mario Kart with IFR goggles, that that have been frosted on the top half of the lenses to simulate foggy conditions, to demonstrate teamwork and communication, which is essential in the air transport industry. It was really interesting to hear about how Air Transport can help move patients in dire need to get help!
