On October 18, 2021, EMT’s from South Alabama came and taught our class how to spine board someone and demonstrated it on a couple of students and asked for a lot of volunteers! There is a basic step by step process to successfully spine board someone. The first step is to grasp the patients head to ensure that the spine is aligned with the head. The next step is that an assistant applies a cervical collar, then the patient is rolled over by one or two assistants with their hands placed on the opposite side of the patient, positioned at the shoulder, hip and knee, after the patient is secured the person at the head of the board should count to three to at which time the assistants should roll the patient toward themselves. Another assistant should quickly place the backboard under the patient. When the board is secured, the patient will be rolled back onto the blackboard. After the patient is positioned at the center of the board, the assistant should secure the upper torso with straps. When that is complete, the chest, pelvis, and upper legs should be secured with straps and well.
