Trauma Week Day 5!

On December 2, 2022, Dr, James Slauterbeck came and spoke to our class again, but this time on ACL tears and the statistics behind them.

He stated that in 1 in 1000 times an ACL tear will occur in a full on sports scrimmage or game. Athletes tear their ACLS, it is most common in males due to football, but if football was taken out of the equation, it is mostly common in women, this is due to women's tendency to be quad dominant rather than hamstring dominant like men. There is also a 5x more risk for women with parents who have a past history of ACL issues, this is due to the genetic influence as well as the lacticity of joints. An ACL tear occur when a the tendon is overworked or had too much force applied, which is a load of greater than 2000 N.

The solution to an ACL tear is operation. The surgery plan needed to fix this type of injury is to reconstruct a new ACL from taking a tendon from another part of the body and replace it, this is known as a tendon graph.

It is interesting to hear Dr. Slauterbeck speak on the statistics that surround ACL tearing in athletes and the treatment plan for someone who has torn an ACL!
